CMU Scholarship to Benefit Community College Students

CMU Scholarship to Benefit Community College Students
May 12, 2011/
A new Central Michigan University scholarship offered through CMU Off-Campus and Online Programs will help more community college students pursue bachelor’s degrees.
The Michigan Community College Academic Achievement Award, which will be awarded for the first time in the 2011-2012 academic year, provides four-year degree opportunities to students attending a community college but who live in a county that lacks a public university. The scholarship will provide financial support to be used at CMU’s online or off-campus locations renewable for up to four continuous years.
“The scholarship addresses state and national initiatives to increase transfer opportunities between community colleges and four-year institutions as well as increasing Michigan’s overall higher education enrollment goals,” said Merodie Hancock, vice president of CMU’s Off-Campus and Online Programs.
A total of 18 scholarships will be awarded when the program is fully implemented. To apply, students must have earned an associate’s degree with a cumulative minimum grade point average of 3.0 from a community college located in a Michigan county that does not have a public residential four-year university. A list of eligible community colleges is attached.
“Many excellent students choose to start at a community college for a variety of reasons,” said William Headley, director of articulation and transfer at Macomb Community College. “Scholarship offerings at senior colleges have traditionally been focused on the high school graduate. It is refreshing to see Central Michigan University recognize the accomplishments of transfer students.”
